While it might seem like a simple pattern, this is one of the most common, significant and important patterns of all and is one of the most likely candidates for a sign of highly intelligent communication. Frequently featuring as a part of other crop patterns and commonly appearing on it’s own in some form usually at the beginning of the crop circle season, this pattern is a prime candidate for what we might look for in a “hello” signal, potentially used to establish communication with other intelligent life in the universe as it resembles a hydrogen atom or could also represent a cell. This pattern usually appears at the beginning of the crop circle season with the exception of the 2023 season when it unusually appeared at the very end of the season.Â
SETI scans the hydrogen line radio frequency at 1420mhz which is the same frequency emitted by accelerated hydrogen atoms. Hydrogen is the most common element in the Universe and is therefore thought to be a radio frequency that intelligent beings might use to communicate with other intelligent life. Interestingly the famous “Wow!” signal was hypothesised to be of alien origin because it was at this Hydrogen line frequency and measured at a radically high intensity. Interestingly not long after this “Wow!” signal event, the crop circle phenomena as we know it today started.
Similarly the Pioneer plaque, attached to the Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 spacecraft, portrays the hyperfine transition of neutral hydrogen and used the wavelength as a standard scale of measurement. This plaque was intended to be universally understandable by any other intelligent species that might encounter the spacecraft and features a similar depiction for hydrogen.
