Many of the formations rated as genuine signals appear close to the white chalk horses of southern England. This post looks at that link and the theories behind it.
The white horses
There are around 16 white horses cut into the chalk hills of Britain. Most are in Wiltshire, with others in Oxfordshire and nearby counties. The best known are the Uffington White Horse and the Westbury White Horse. Uffington is thought to be around 3,000 years old. Most of the others are a few hundred years old.
The same area holds Stonehenge, Avebury and Silbury Hill. It is also where most crop circles appear, along with many reports of light orbs and UFO sightings. In the Crop Signals catalogue the White Horse tag covers more signals than any other location.
Three theories
1. A target for contact
Britain was the most powerful nation on Earth for much of the last few centuries. An intelligence wanting to reach humanity might choose the country with the most reach. Formations near famous landmarks would also be seen by the most people.
2. Ley lines
Some believe the old monuments of the area sit on ley lines, lines of energy that cross the landscape. If formations are made with some form of energy, these lines could explain why they cluster around the old sites.
3. A gift of horses
This is the most speculative idea. It suggests horses were given to humanity by a higher intelligence to help early civilisation along, in the same way some believe human DNA was altered in the distant past. The white horses would then be a memory of that gift. There is no hard evidence for this, but it would explain why the formations favour these sites.
Where this leaves us
